Students this week read the remaining 5 chapters of the book Tumba and engaged in various activities to write a summary and a prediction. Students took a listening quiz on the book today as well. There will be a project students need to complete related to the book that will be due in early January. It has been shared with them in Google Classroom. Please encourage them to begin thinking about what they plan to do and get a start on it early. Projects will be shared with the class. Next week we will begin a new unit on travel.

Students in Spanish 1B continue to read independently books of their choice and complete reading responses daily. Grades for them are recorded weekly. Most students have read at least two short level 1 novels and some students have read 4. Students read for about 15 minutes at the beginning of each class. Students have also been working on the new story Irene through some interactive independent and in class practice. We have also been working with the song Vivir mi vida by Marc Anthony. We have been singing other songs to review conjugations for verbs and the grammatical structure to talk about where you are going in order to converse about making plans. Next week we will get further into the story of Irene and work with reading comprehension and retelling the story.
Students completed an assessment on Mafalda last week and got the tests back earlier this week. Please check the gradebook to make sure your child's grades are up to date. This week we have been working with a story from a popular comic Mafalda, in Argentina. Students have been learning some vocabulary to talk about daily routine, as well as the vocabulary found here Students also will be working on speaking about activities that are part of their daily routine next week. Students this week continued to read their choice novel for 10-15 a class period and respond to a question about their reading. These are in the grade book weekly. I am enjoying reading about the connections students are finding to the books. Students are also in the process of editing a first draft of the pez dorado y el gato gris story. There is a Google presentation on the linked page that has the original story, as well as one below that shows student work. We spent time discussing what good writers do and students were asked to review the presentation to find ideas from their peers before completing the final copy which will be graded. We also began working on the Escuelas en el mundo unit that will look at schools and students around the world through various lessons and activities.
I am excited to be working with Spanish 1B students this year! Students began early this week reviewing and learning some new vocabulary to tell a story about a goldfish and a cat. They will be working on a new version of it or a completely new story as homework for Monday. Students also have selected some novels for choice reading time in class, which began today. Students will be reading for 10 minutes at the beginning of each class and answering a question in English about what they read. You will see a reading response score in the gradebook regularly. Students are able to check out a novel for reading at home, provided it is returned by the following class period for in class use.
Students will continue to be exposed to a lot of Spanish songs to help learn, as well as read and write more extensively this year. Instruction in class will primarily occur in Spanish, with English used to clarify or explain instructions and routines as needed. Students have been adjusting to this well this week. The amount of Spanish used will increase as the month goes on. Please see the class syllabus here. Next week we will begin reviewing information about school related vocabulary and comparing and contrasting various information about schools in Spanish. Students should have a Quizlet account at www.quizlet.com from last year. If not, they may want to create one. It is one of the various options they will have for practicing vocabulary in class. Students will use Quizlet regularly to help practice vocabulary interactively. Quizlet is a website, but also has free apps available. Students should expect homework nightly. Each lesson will typically have a Google Presentation that you and students may access on the class website. If you should notice that your child is getting frustrated, please have him/her (or you) talk to me as soon as possible so we can work together to help them. The earlier, the better! |
