I am excited to be working with Spanish 1B students this year! Students began early this week reviewing and learning some new vocabulary to tell a story about a goldfish and a cat. They will be working on a new version of it or a completely new story as homework for Monday. Students also have selected some novels for choice reading time in class, which began today. Students will be reading for 10 minutes at the beginning of each class and answering a question in English about what they read. You will see a reading response score in the gradebook regularly. Students are able to check out a novel for reading at home, provided it is returned by the following class period for in class use.
Students will continue to be exposed to a lot of Spanish songs to help learn, as well as read and write more extensively this year. Instruction in class will primarily occur in Spanish, with English used to clarify or explain instructions and routines as needed. Students have been adjusting to this well this week. The amount of Spanish used will increase as the month goes on. Please see the class syllabus here.
Next week we will begin reviewing information about school related vocabulary and comparing and contrasting various information about schools in Spanish.
Students should have a Quizlet account at www.quizlet.com from last year. If not, they may want to create one. It is one of the various options they will have for practicing vocabulary in class. Students will use Quizlet regularly to help practice vocabulary interactively. Quizlet is a website, but also has free apps available. Students should expect homework nightly.
Each lesson will typically have a Google Presentation that you and students may access on the class website.
If you should notice that your child is getting frustrated, please have him/her (or you) talk to me as soon as possible so we can work together to help them. The earlier, the better!
